About Magento

The first version of Magento was released in 2008 as an Open Source e-commerce platform. Today, the software is one of the world’s most popular dedicated shop software. Magento, which is based on the Zend framework, is an original product of Magento, which was acquired by Adobe Inc. in June 2018.

The Magento (1) shop software was offered in two versions. The free Magento Community Edition for tech-savvy retailers, and the paid Magento Enterprise Edition. Magento Community only offered the core framework. The free version was not offered with any warranty. However, shop operators could always fall back on the Magento user community for advice and support. Magento Enterprise, on the other hand, entailed a complete solution with expansion options and support. Magento (1) is no longer officially available since the release of Magento 2, and the Enterprise version can no longer be licensed.

Magento 2, which builds on a new software architecture, was released in late 2017 and brought with it a revised version model: Enterprise and Enterprise Cloud have become one and are marketed as Magento Commerce. Users can still choose self-hosted “on-premise” version or a leased “SaaS” version. The scope of features remains the same. The same applies for the Magento Community Edition, which is now offered as Magento Open Source.

The custom versions Market Ready Germany and Magento DE were developed specifically for Germany, as the original versions did not meet the legal requirements of the German market. Market Ready Germany is quite similar to Magento Community/Open Source, and Magento DE is comparable to the Enterprise/Commerce version.
