Dust off the broomstick and get the cauldron ready to do some e-commerce magic in October! While preparations are ongoing for the biggest online sales season at the end of the year, you also need to get your ducks in a row for the run-up to Halloween and the many opportunities the month of October has to offer for e-commerce. If that aligns with your online presence, you can have some fun this month, but you could also divert from this pervasive theme to embrace some very different international days.

Important Marketing Dates

Very importantly, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a disease that not only impacts women directly and indirectly. Get that pink ribbon out there and show your company’s solidarity. There are plenty of social media influencers raising awareness and offering support, talking about their personal journeys, or creating communities. Align your label, brand, or company to the cause, culminating in Breast Cancer Day on October 25.

Here are some individual dates you might also consider in your campaigns for the month:

October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons. How about a campaign celebrating the older people in our families, in care homes, and those living alone? Raise awareness and take a stand against elder abuse, loneliness, and poverty of older people in our society.

Fittingly, World Animal Welfare Day and World Smile Day both fall on October 4th. What a great e-commerce opportunity! Get your customers to post selfies with their adopted pets, both smiling into the camera – and how about a little competition or giveaway for the top 10 best submissions?

We celebrate International Teachers’ Day on October 5. Teachers are shaping the minds and hearts of our children and are worth a campaign or two. How about some discounts for teachers as a little “Thank You” for these amazing people?

October 16th is World Food Day. What a great day for raising awareness for those less fortunate than us, the people starving in the world. Raise money for famine-struck regions or organize a soup kitchen for the homeless.
Conversely, you could celebrate abundance instead by featuring dishes from around the world shared by your customers via your social media channels.

United Nations Day is on October 24. A great opportunity for your company, label, or brand to demonstrate inclusiveness, and share the stories and backgrounds of the people working with you. On this day, we celebrate people, cultures, and unity. Encourage your customers to tell their own stories, share pictures of their national costumes, or feature videos reflecting their culture and heritage.

And then: here it is – Halloween on October 31st. Best costume competition, anyone? Gruesome storytelling? There are endless opportunities for outstanding Halloween e-commerce marketing – it’s all up to your imagination!

Depending on the focus of your e-commerce, or the kind of clientele you are targeting: Diwali celebrations begin on October 31 and run until November 4. Diwali, or the Hindu Festival of Lights, is one of India’s most well-known holidays. Celebrated every autumn, it honors the victory of good over evil and light over dark.

In preparation for Diwali, families spend days cleaning and decorating their homes. They also shop for new clothes and accessories to wear during the festival.

e-Commerce Events not to be missed in October

E- Show Madrid 2024, 16-17 October.
With an estimated 5000 to 20,000 visitors and around 100 – 500 exhibitors (based on previous editions), this will likely be among the top events for the European e-commerce sector. However, according to reviews from previous years, most round tables, presentations, and speeches will be held in Spanish only. The trade fair portion of the event, however, will be more accessible for international attendees.

Code BEAM 2024, 14-15 October, Berlin.
Code BEAM Europe is a networking conference for people and companies using and developing high-performance, fault-tolerant, and resilient applications that scale to large numbers of users in production in areas like Fintech, e-Commerce, IoT, Gaming, Blockchain, Security, Machine Learning, and more.

Ecommerce Warsaw Expo 2024, October 25.
This expo is the largest event in Poland for local e-commerce entrepreneurs and solution providers, making this a great networking opportunity for anyone looking to expand their e-commerce opportunities to include Poland.

Bottom line

Yes, we are all busy getting ready for the most stressful e-commerce months of 2024 and the great sales figures we all want to see rolling in. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and ensure our e-commerce efforts are on point in October, just like in every other month. That includes excellent and informative product texts in the languages of your target markets, perfectly localized dynamic content, and engaging images and slogans tailored to specific markets and target groups.
